Why We Still Read, and Why I Still Write
Finding the Spark: Why We Still Read, and Why I Still Write
My journey with creative writing started years ago with an offbeat, heartfelt little book of poetry. It wasn't traditional, and it certainly didn't follow anyone else's playbook, but it came straight from the chest. It was an honest look at how I saw the world, bound up in lines and verses.
After that first book, time passed, life happened, and years slipped by. Yet the urge to create never really left—it just waited quietly beneath the surface.
Now, stepping back into the craft, I feel a fresh edge pulling me toward both fiction and nonfiction. Ideas are knocking again, characters are taking shape, and truths I want to explore on the page are begging to be told.
Still, starting over in today's world comes with a lingering question. Every writer glances around at the glowing screens, the endless scrolling, and the five-second attention spans and wonders: Are people still reading books?
It’s an easy trap to fall into. It’s easy to convince yourself that the written word has lost its hold on people, or that putting your energy into long-form stories is a relic of the past.
Then came a profound realization that cleared away all that doubt.
People haven’t stopped reading—they’ve just become more intentional about what earns their time. If the subject matter hooks a reader, if the voice is genuine, and if the story hits them right where they live, they will read it. They will stay up until two in the morning turning pages. They will carry the book in their bag until the spine cracks. The appetite for a story that makes us feel seen, challenged, or entertained has never gone away; it’s woven into human nature.
Realizing that took the weight right off my shoulders. My job isn't to worry about the entire publishing industry or compete with short-form noise. My job is simply to write with conviction, lean into that unique edge, and trust that the right story will find the reader who needs it.
The poetry was the foundation. This next chapter in fiction and nonfiction is where the real exploration begins.
To anyone else sitting on an idea or wondering whether it’s too late to pick up the pen: write it anyway. The readers are still out there, waiting for what only you can say.
